Restorative Treatments for Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a very common condition of the foot and ankle. From wear and tear of year on hard surfaces to traumatic injuries causing destruction of the cartilage, patient's suffer with significant pain while limiting their ability to live actively.. Recent research has shown that pain injection therapies are non-surgical alternatives that help the body’s biological processes. These providing a natural lubricant into the joint that relieve mild to moderate pain, improves mobility, and helps the patient get back to their normal activities without the need of steroids' or narcotics.

Many arthritic patients find that their synovial joint fluid gets weaker as the chronic disease progresses. By injecting hyaluronic acid directly to affected areas, some therapies are able to restore the lubricating and shock-absorbing properties of joint fluid. These therapies are not steroids' nor are they narcotics. They also do not require an incision OR visit to the operating room. These are safe, office base procedure under direct visualization with ultrasound.

  1. SUPARTZ FX: Administered as a series of 3 to 5 injections directly into the joint, SUPARTZ FX works as a viscosupplement, increasing the levels of healthy hyaluronic acid in the affected joint, to safely reduce joint pain and stiffness, while restoring the protective benefits of lubrication and shock absorption. Hyaluronic acid is a molecule found naturally throughout the human body. It is an important component of joint fluid, called synovial fluid, which provides lubrication and cushioning for normal, healthy knees. When you have osteoarthritis of the joints, the hyaluronic acid breaks down and becomes diluted, reducing its natural elastic properties, which can further degrade cartilage tissue and cause increased joint pain.

  2. GELSYN-3 is a three-injection hyaluronic acid therapy that provides safe, long-lasting relief from joint pain and stiffness, along with consistent, long-term benefits.. Developed with next-generation hyaluronic acid manufacturing technology, GELSYN-3 eliminates the risk of allergies and sensitivities that can occur with animal-derived hyaluronic acid. And it has been specially formulated for a level of viscosity that may maximize joint lubrication and protection.

  3. DUROLANE is a unique, single-injection hyaluronic acid therapy that provides long-lasting pain relief from joint osteoarthritis and acts as a supplemental lubricant and shock-absorber for affected joints. What makes DUROLANE different is its concentration of hyaluronic acid which has been carefully stabilized to resist degradation, extending the time DUROLANE stays in the joint and adding to its long-lasting effect. Introduced worldwide in 2001, DUROLANE has been tested in more clinical studies than any other single-injection hyaluronic therapy on the market. It is proven safe for repeated courses of therapy and provides longer-lasting pain relief versus steroid injections. The hyaluronic acid in DUROLANE is also derived from a nonanimal source to reduce any risk of allergic reaction.

To learn more about these 3 products please visit Bioventus. These 3 therapy have been FDA approved for use of the knee BUT not the foot and ankle. These are termed experimental for the foot and ankle; however, have many studies showing their success. Here is a link of several of these studies: H/A for the foot and ankle or go to google scholar and type "hyaluronic acid for the foot ankle". Just like in the knee these are not cures BUT options to reduce pain and increase activity, giving patients another option besides invasive surgery.

If you are having osteoarthritis of the foot and ankle and looking for an alternative treatment besides a fusion, arthrodesis let us see if this option is for you.
